[It’s] the kind of movie I want to root for. It’s a film that excavates and restores a trailblazing woman director to her rightful place in history. While the documentary’s heart is in the right place, and loaded with many historical goodies for silent movie fans and those interested in championing women directors, the way “Be Natural” presents its findings feels unorganized.

The result is occasionally a little frantic — animated segments sometimes bring the past to life and sometimes get in the way — and often tremendously moving. The interviews with Guy Blaché and with her daughter, Simone, bring a tender, complicated dimension of personality, and make it feel as if the dawn of movies is not so far away after all.

It offers specific nuggets of information that help illuminate Guy-Blaché’s story, particularly the insidious way she was disrespected by scholars and cut out of early histories of the birth of cinema. . . . Yet Green’s eagerness to amplify Guy-Blaché’s accomplishments leads to some bizarre missteps, like inviting filmmakers who know nothing of her work to familiarize themselves and offer snippets of commentary.
