Yet another mosaic romantic comedy has the distinction of being more serious minded than many of its counterparts. Doesn't always succeed in its balancing act between comedy and drama, but the cast keeps it grounded even when it threatens to become too outlandish. An uneven but mostly charming affair.
As far as mainstream, romantic comedies go, it's actually pretty good - which still only means a 3/5 rating, but still, it's one that you can enjoy when the girlfriend of significant other begs you to watch. Trust me, there are much worse alternatives!
Appears to be a raunchy sex comedy but is actually sneakily good-hearted and earnest and delivers a much more satisfying experience than the raunchy sex comedy would have. One brilliant scene announces two alternative movie conventions, declares what's going to happen, and then proceeds to flout the convention naturally, humorously, endearingly, and very satisfyingly.
An underrated, edgy comedy drama with an excellent narrative catalyst - where player becomes mensch to a middle-aged married man in an existential crisis due to his separation. The script is a delight, subverting the stereotypes of each character as their journeys (regardless of some superbly deployed tragicomic scenarios) reach humane conclusions. An uplifting, fairly realistic, acerbic treat.
It's never as funny as it should be, mostly because it only ever hints at being daring, but there are some fine performances in here, including a rare good one from Gosling and a touching (if sometimes devolving into the familiar) one from Carell. It picks up in humour in the last half, but ultimately ends up feeling like a really tame Todd Solondz film - and those just shouldn't exist. 3 stars.
Initially, I only saw the last half of this movie and I thought, "Yeah, sweet, ok, whatever." Then I decided I SHOULD give it some respect and see it again. And oh boy. Everything about it is, in a word, endearing.
