Gloria Dirigido por Sebastián Lelio
Writer-director Sebastián Lelio, whose fourth feature this is, has a confident way of parceling out exuberance and melancholy in a setting of mundane everyday realism. But this is also one of those films that you can’t imagine without its magnetic and superbly nuanced central performance, and it’s no disrespect to Lelio to say that Gloria is as much Paulina García’s film as it is his (at Berlin, she won the Silver Bear for Best Actress).

The film’s strength is that it operates both as a compelling character study of an alluring, humane protagonist whose fragility and resourcefulness sit side by side, and as a wider contemplation of the state of the nation, without the latter dimension ever appearing forced or imposed.

The beauty of the mundane is what gives the picture its narrative drive, and its vitality… What Lelio and Garcia pull off here is so delicate and sturdy that it defies such easy categorization.

  • Jenny Coldpussy's rating of the film Gloria

Wow. Having seen only this one of his films, I dare say Lelio is the Cassavetes of our time, not that this Gloria reminds me Gena Rowlands' one at all, it's just the way he lets you see the characters' emotions, their little outbursts of freedom, that feel so intimate and so exciting... it's amazing. And I think this Gloria is arguably the best character to ever exist in a film.

Such an honest and playful performance by an amazing actress about a moment in life that we don't think too much about, but once you see this movie you're gonna wonder what are you going to search for being happy once you're 50 and divorced. No cliches, feels like I'm looking at my mother.

  • HenriqueA's rating of the film Gloria

Though kinda rough at the edges, a unique and pretty great look at the pains and happyness of the single/dating life of a 50+ years old woman that is still quite alive and looking for fun/trouble as though she was in her 20s. Paulina Garcia kicks some MAJOR ASS as Glória!

  • msmichel's rating of the film Gloria

Paulina Garcia gives an incredible performance as the title character here giving us a peak at middle age romantic aspirations, heartache and desperation that we surely don't want to find ourselves. The problem is the lack of levity and the despair and depression we wind up wallowing in...though for some that might be the films' best attributes. Being marketed in North America as a feel good romantic comedy...why?

  • mpho3's rating of the film Gloria

After viewing this, I watched the trailer for Lelio's U.S. remake, but Gloria Bell looks like a scene-by-scene remake, which seems unnecessary since this original version strikes nearly all the right notes. I envy the character Gloria's fortitude and chutzpa, appreciate García's screen presence, and thank Lelio for taking on a strata of life often cinematically ignored. 3.5 stars

  • tinderness's rating of the film Gloria

Unbedingt ansehen!

  • bodhishin's rating of the film Gloria

Paulina Garcia gives a great performance that kept me watching (hence the added 2 stars above). The story seems forced and underdeveloped, relying on familiar tropes with a dance scene every 15 minutes to fill in the space.

  • Loz Loory's rating of the film Gloria

So glad to see this before the Hollywood version is foisted upon us. Paulina Garcia is perfect in every nuance of her character. Love that the film begins and ends with her dancing alone. She may get knocked down, but she gets up again and continues searching, which is all we can really do in life. Love when she gives a tip to dancing Death. Appreciated that the music score was kept to a minimum.
