Hereditary Dirigido por Ari Aster
A visceral, harrowing horror movie about a demonic cult with an American nuclear family in its grip. . . . Paimon is male, even when disembodied, even when growing up a girl; he is “covetous of a male human body” because it complements his essence. And yet his journey to find such a body drives the film’s terror.

Aster’s artistry here is phenomenally assured, even classical, as he deftly mixes subgenres, while focusing more on his bewildered characters than on the horrors that either they or we can see (often as blurs or shadows). . . . On any view, it is a diabolically assured debut.

This is the psychologically scariest film I’ve ever seen that has no thesis, no greater point it’s driving home, no true coherence, nor character development. As a witch and magic practitioner, I was painfully aware that writer/director Ali Aster steered into a bevy of supernatural topics he didn’t adequately research or articulate.

  • chanandre's rating of the film Hereditary

sit 'Get Out'+'Babadook'+'Annihilation'+'Cabin Fever'+'Woodshock'+'Melancholia'+'Donnie Darko' on rocking chairs, strap'em down on a merry-go-round, start it up, speed it up to the max Hitch-style, break the security lever, let it spin out of control; result: Hereditary! There's cray cray, there's batshit crazy and there's "Hereditary". Jumped out of my seat more than if I was riding a dirt bike through a minefield.

  • (arc)'s rating of the film Hereditary

Like 'Scared Straight' for dysfunctional families. This shit helped me get my life back on track. Whatever your minor beef with this movie is, get over it. Good horror films have have always been illuminating and this one goes further.

  • film_lies101's rating of the film Hereditary

This was kinda of a letdown. The mom insisting the son (who seems significantly older) take the sister to the party felt so awkward and forced. The writer is so transparent in the 'NEED" to have the sister go to the party so the plot can take off. The consistent soundtrack was also distracting

  • Spiritchaser's rating of the film Hereditary

Tragedy is neither the fatal flaw in our character nor unforeseen mishaps. Rather, what defines the tragic is the naive belief that we are in control. Our fatal flaw is precisely this false sense of security. True horror is the recognition that even awareness of the (Oedipal) myth in advance does nothing to prevent its actualization. We are beholden to hidden primordial forces of the earth.

  • HenriqueA's rating of the film Hereditary

This is hardly a perfect film but I cannot in good conscience give it anything lesse than 5 stars because...fuck...what the hell. I have no fucking idea who Ar Aster is but I really want to follow this dude around, you creepy motherfucker.

  • Z's rating of the film Hereditary

Contains a killer first act which unfortunately the film is not able to build and capitalize on. Cold dread gives way to histrionics and silliness. The ending cribs from "Rosemary's Baby" in a desperate way. The material fails to live up to it's reputation as one of the scariest movies ever made. I suspect the young critics who applauded this film have not seen a lot of the better movies in the genre. Disappointing.

  • MATTEO BITTANTI's rating of the film Hereditary

Like Ti West's House of the Devil, Aster's overrated and overhyped debut squanders all its riches along the way. The ludicrous climax - which evokes Robert Eggers' Witch's grotesque finale - sabotages an otherwise heady premise. Hereditary does not develop: it just dissipates. Rosemary's Baby gone bonkers.

  • Rafael Zen's rating of the film Hereditary

One star for the head scene. One star for Collette's amazing performance - as usual. Another one for its overall mood and photography. And a last one for keeping me biting my nails so hard: that much tension, that much grief. But let's face it - it loses strenght by the end. A haunting experience that's worth watching.
