That’s clearly an expression of self-deprecating guilt from a writer who felt a little dirty turning Vertigo into a teary-eyed sick joke. But Bujold’s enthusiasm as a performer redeems the entire picture, especially when she’s asked to perform flashback scenes that shouldn’t work, but, thanks to her, represent another of De Palma’s fearlessly experimental whims.

Replicas within replicas and dreams within dreams, the Brian De Palma position: “Beauty should be protected,” says the tycoon about to embark on a restoration of his own. A tale retold or rather remade, as befits the structure of Paul Schrader’s screenplay (with citations from Dante’s La Vita Nuova later recycled into Cat People) and the filmmaker’s reflexively tangled approach to the psychological thriller.

…The 98 minutes of Obsession could hardly be stretched into the 120 of Vertigo without severe risk of monotony. And if the current film seems to differ most sharply from its source in its self-conscious awareness of its own deliberations (one does not feel that De Palma, like Hitchcock, is ever working close to his unconscious), it remains seductive chiefly thanks to Herrmann’s rich and affecting score.
