The art lies not in the murder, but in the act of catching the murderer. Hitchcock blows the hinges off of the play's cage, and delights with a film that, while not reaching the exorbitant highs of his later work, signals everything one comes to expect and, above all else, love on one of his thrillers.

  3. Noel Rosen's rating of the film Festim Diabólico

Suspenseful and all consuming. Some of the dialogue and plot are a little off base, but still a good movie none the less.

  4. Hisham Beckett's rating of the film Festim Diabólico

When you die, monkeys will play over your grave. And that's exactly what the author of this thing did over Nietzsche's grave. the movie was almost perfect until the last minutes, these were the most degenerate and disappointing last minutes of a movie i have ever seen.

  8. Metropolis's rating of the film Festim Diabólico

I can't say I love the end of the movie, it sounds too redeemer for my taste. But it is an undeniable masterpiece. An uncomfortable, clean and wicked masterpiece.

  9. Bob's rating of the film Festim Diabólico

80 minutes of pure tension are prime example of Hitchcock's "bomb analogy". It's so engaging that it actually feels as if it was filmed in one single take, an optical illusion as a contrast to the main antagonist's fractured point of view. And philosophical innuendos are the main reason why this is the auteur's darkest work - implications of symbolic rituals bring the sense of perversion unlike any other of his works

  10. Ethan's rating of the film Festim Diabólico

This is one of the best and most impressive Hitchcock films. Stylistically on point and the intensity is non-stop that you will be on the edge of your seat the whole way through. A sadistic battle of wits that would mirror what society had become and what it would blossom into.

  11. Benjamin Reid's rating of the film Festim Diabólico

A campy dark comedy with so much arch and homoeroticism. It basically feels like Hitchcock is parodying his common tropes, but this is even before many of his major films. The cat and mouse duel of superior intellects is so ridiculous, but its more melodramatic moments come surprisingly natural. The realization of the difference between theory and reality is (surprisingly) quite an emotional beat.

  14. Adam Whybray's rating of the film Festim Diabólico

3.8 stars. I'm certainly much more fond of this one that Hitchcock himself purportedly was! Sure, Stewart doesn't really convince as a philosophy lecturer and trying to hide cuts through moving in on the backs of suits now merely highlights the cuts for most viewers, but by centering the action around the chest/table Hitch keeps up the suspense for an agonising stretch of time. Pleasingly queer and nasty!

I had not seen this one before, now my favorite by Hitchcock. The camerawork is complex, switching to hand-held, gliding seamlessly from one room to room or making a switch of angles to capture reactions. James Stewart is masterful, revealing a sly & sarcastic side. All the characters well portrayed, with subtle gestures & hints of inner layers. A visual experiment, it brings the audience onto the stage. Brilliant.

  19. Christofi Cotonou's rating of the film Festim Diabólico

Considering Hitch's disappointment and Ebert's apathy, Rope is solid. The piano music is dreamlike, Debussy-esque, and the handmade view of NYC magical. The story is equally well-written. It's about ideology from the educated upper-classes and how it goes too far - relevant today as ever.

  20. Daniel Thomas Freeman's rating of the film Festim Diabólico

Stagey and uneven ... suffers a little from the technical compromises required to the attempt to film it as one long shot ... but full of classic Hitchcock touches and another great performance from James Stewart. And the shot of the housekeeper, the books and the dinner chest is something else. As is the long held shot on James Stewart the first time he realises something is up.
