If you agree that the medium of movie films has a lot to do with colours, lights and sounds, you should see this 1964 Georgian movie. I haven't seen one like this before - a movie whose each frame bursts with color (at times deliberate lack of it) bringing a stream of beautiful art passing before your eyes! The sound complements it too with folk music and sounds of life. The whole experience is magnetic and artful
Mystisch-archaisches Narrativ in grandiosen Bildern. / Mystic-archaic narrativ in magnificent pictures. An intuitive, partly subjective camera which show to arouse enthusiasm with unusual pictures. This movement, these colours, the depth, the space - marvellous!
Gut
An epic and tragic fairy tale about love; dreamy, moody, and mysterious; great music. For the most part the cinematography is impressive and some scenes are absolutely beautiful; however, the editing is rather awkward and sometimes disorienting. Some parts seem unnecessary, and it would probably have more impact in, let's say, a 60 minute format.
Beautiful and kaleidoscopic journey through the unfortunate life of a carpathian villager. Disorienting at times, and frequently overwhelming. The folk music throughout - while definitely not something that I would listen to outside of the movie - genuinely elevate the film's atmosphere and create an authentic vibe. Poor Ivanko.
Waaah. Never witnessed such an urgency to create images: the way this crazy Georgian moves the camera is absolutely compelling. It's not a perfect movie, but all its imperfections come from this very excess of enthusiasm – so I ended up loving them too. And the dresses, and the colors of snow and fire... Such a cinematographic treasure. Such a crazy film to fill your cinephile hearts with.
This is a myth and its story develops just like we guess. Two lovers seperated by a death. Alive one mourns and can't go on until the death brings them together. so if a film deals with a mythological substance, director must do something to make it a good film. Images are the everything for this poetic cinema language, i can imagine its scenario is a poem rather than a prose. Paradjanov is unbelievable.
Parajanov shows us the traditional life of the 19th century Carpathian people. Strangly intoxicating folk music, colorful costumes and mysterious mountain landscapes. A otherworldly work of art - like a dream conjured from a time and place long lost. Highly recommended.
