This is psychological horror that lies in wait for its victims and its audience; the majority of its 97-minute running time is given over not to violence but to the sadistic, skin-prickling sense that something is terribly amiss.

This new version, which was adapted by British writer-director James Watkins... transfers the action to the U.K. and tacks on an action-heavy happier ending, undermining the unsettling effectiveness of its source material. Yet those choices also make the film a much loonier experience.

If this Speak No Evil remake possesses any merit whatsoever, it is entirely owed to the thespian talent involved.

McAvoy is the most compelling reason to see this one. The original may be darker, but it didn’t have McAvoy.

Beyond the usual Hollywood impulse to try to increase art-house-sized audiences to big box-office levels, there was really no reason to remake Danish filmmaker Christian Tafdrup’s squirmy hell-is-other-people scenario. But in doing so, writer-director James Watkins has swapped out malevolence for a tamer sense of misadventure.

Speak No Evil is a deliciously tense ride from The Woman in Black and Eden Lake’s James Watkins: a remake of a bleak Danish cult hit from 2022, retooled as a blood-soaked horror-comedy of manners.

A dark comedy of middle-class manners is given oomph by McAvoy’s portrait of a certain type of big English personality.

For the most part, Watkins adheres to the original’s overall design and trajectory while adding some new details and scenes; he also pads the running time an unnecessary 15 or so minutes. He knows how to gin up scares with shadows and a creaking, inhospitable house...

“Speak No Evil” is the rowdiest horror flick in ages, a hilarious and venomous little nasty that cattle-prods the audience to scream everything its lead characters choke down.

It’s interesting to see the Blumhouse factory line deliver a remake that’s a little more off-kilter and adult-oriented than the norm, and it’ll be interesting to see if genre fans are disappointed by how much of this film plays like straight drama. But Watkins’ slick direction and McAvoy’s frankly terrifying performance make this an effective, worthy if not essential entry into the “If you go out to the woods today…” creepy canon.

The talent assembled is promising. The original film is fantastic, both darkly funny and deeply, deeply chilling. So what could go wrong? Well, Blumhouse and Watkins could fuck with the recipe to cater to American expectations, and they've done just that.
