Sinopse

A museum keeper spits into the eyepiece of an ancient peep-show and sets the musty machine going. Inside, the puppets partake of a series of bizarre rituals amongst the dirt and the grime.

As obvious as the film may be, it’s undeniably effective, and its constant focus on the minutiae of its animated life consistently depicts human sociality as material. Which, naturally, makes it immaterial.

An eery musical accompaniment by orchestral electronic pioneer Karlheinz Stockhausen appropriately accompanies the piece. Crocodile Street is perhaps the most accomplished Quay work, entirely animated by puppets and the intricate and fantastic microcosms of their universe. Like The Comb, it features stunning work in miniature, and a filmmaking precision that world-builds on an entirely new level.

Calling this gorgeous film an “animated short” undersells it mightily. The Quays’ version of Schulz’s story is hardly a literal reading, yet it’s so dreamily concrete that it’s likely to linger in your mind for decades… With its wordless poetry, the Quays’ extraordinary vignette tells us a million things: how longing can be both oblique and consuming; why it’s only human to succumb to the promises of the modern world; what despair looks like, as expressed by a puppet man’s doleful eyes.
