This is a spectacular action vehicle with an incredible ensemble cast that sets this movie above all the rest of its kind. Lee Marvin maintains his badass and tough as nails persona here. And Aldrich crafts an engaging and intense war picture that is also a human drama.
A testosterone-fuelled sausage fest of reprobates sent on a devil-may-care assault on WWII Nazi extremists. Its anti-establishment message blends with a pro-war blend of patriotism. We, the audience, placate this group of anarchic anti-heroes because of the heroism of their war mission. There's something problematic about this, much like the alpha male machismo films of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood.
Robert Aldrich's The Dirty Dozen is exciting, thrilling, explosive, and full of spectacular action sequences. Supported by talented A-list actors. Lee Marvin looks cool as the leader of twelve soldiers. But, John Cassavetes is the scene stealer in this movie. He's a psychotic soldier. I must admit that he's a loveable bastard. Sadly he didn't win Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. I feel the training scene is too long.
One of Aldrich's finest: bizarre, bloody, sadistically, violent, action-packed but also -at times- comedic, psychologically & extremely entertaining movie. A group of grotesque soldier-sociopaths-criminals who are released from the military-jail in order to kill Nazis in a suicide-mission. Excellent performances from an outstanding cast. Countless times copied; this is the original & ultimate one. Masterpiece.
Grandissimo Aldrich.
This anti-hero, fk the establishment, exercise in machismo certainly has its legion of fans. A group of military convicts is recruited to massacre a German officer's retreat and are considered extremely expendable. One is meant to identify with these murderers and rapists but their final act of barbarism leaves a bad taste. Cassavetes and Marvin are very good here and rest of cast play their archetypes well.
More like 3 1/2 out of 5 stars. The Dirty Dozen is like the messed up and less spacey brother of Kelly's Heroes. The Dirty Dozen was definitely entertaining but the 3rd act where they actually go on their mission had a darker tone than the rest of the movie. Beyond that and a couple other minor complaints it was a fun watch with a great cast.
