Any smart-aleck high-school film nerd can tell you that Lanthimos is copying Kubrick, the fish-eye lenses maestro, who couldn’t resist preening technology to underscore his misanthropic tales. Lanthimos outlived Kubrick and so gives us the fish-eye cliché to reassure Millennial viewers that it’s okay to laugh at people who are targets of their envy and disdain.

The patriarchal circuits through which a film moves curtail the radicality of its use of abjection, especially when this is used by men as an aesthetic tool. Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Favourite (2018) uses the abject status of its central character to cursorily present a challenge to sex and gender categories, but its feminism is superficial. Here abjection is without tenderness; corporality met by patriarchal coldness.

The Favourite is perverse and sadomasochistic, a gratifying evocation of doddering power and the jockeying that swarms it in decline.

O que as pessas estão dizendo?

  • Duncan Gray's rating of the film A Favorita

Lanthimos hits Oscar gold by finding the juicy spot between familiar prestige and batshit insanity, but what's most surprising about the film is that, beneath the viciousness and gleeful obscenity, lies a tenderly felt sympathy for the pains of female competition. Colman is the heart and soul of both a satire and a love story. No drama of 2018 has a sadder final act—you yearn for them to all be happy together.

  • Jason's rating of the film A Favorita

Truly remarkable the extent to which Lanthimos has, breaking away from the screenwriter of his four previous features and setting his latest in the 18th century, very much made another Lanthimos film. His maximalism can be exhausting and his absurdist tendencies tend to make me walk away from his busily brilliant movies experiencing a flat and flaccid meaninglessness. The characters make THE FAVOURITE my favourite.

  • Not A Sexy Vampire's rating of the film A Favorita

Lanthimos' take on All About Eve is his most accessible film and one of his best. A comedy and a tragedy with nuanced characters (and career best performances from Colman, Stone and Weisz) and hilarious, biting wit. It's such a fun time that one can barely notice that under all the sarcasm lies a complex mediation on power imbalances, love, sexuality and loyalty. And calling your loved one a badger. Brilliant.

  • Zac Weber's rating of the film A Favorita

The hilarious script cuts through what could have been a very dull palace court drama. The fabulous interiors and textures add another layer to the playful camerawork. This all goes without mentioning the three lead actresses, who could not be any more perfect in their roles. How about that dance sequence?

  • Zachary T.'s rating of the film A Favorita

The Golden Globes have done precious little this year to move away from their reputation as the 5.9% PBR of awards season, but they got one thing right — nominating all three of Yorgos’ fiery leads. They, (with help from a brillaint screenplay) juggle sensitivity and cruel wit against a backdrop of anachronisms and strangeness that upends genre conventions in thoughtful — and hilarious — ways.

  • Ethan's rating of the film A Favorita

Five stars is simply not enough for this masterpiece. Lanthimos delivers an incredible work of art with three actresses at the top of their form. This film is a hilarious mix of comedy, mischief, and betrayal and its downright tragic and amusing. The camerawork here is incredible giving this film a unique look that transcends anything Kubrick ever did.

  • chanandre's rating of the film A Favorita

[UCI El Corte] This is Feminist cinema at its best: depicting women as vulgar, nuanced, cruel, admirable, vicious, sweet, compassionate & backstabbing: same as men. #Equality. Lady Sarah Marlborough writing an apology letter to Queen Anne 'You cunt.'> LMFAO Honestly haven't this good a period drama since Barry Lindon. One for the books. Colman is oh so moving and humane, Stone's gold but Weisz was robbed of an Oscar.

  • El Biffo's rating of the film A Favorita

There's so much beauty and perfection in this picture that I'm going to ignore whatever shortcomings it may have. I spent so much time looking at the stuff IN the picture, that I may have to watch it again to actually see the film in a complete way. I am a sucker for incredibly gorgeous production and design, and all the femme perversity and evil just makes it all that more delicious.
