The Lego Movie, like the rest of Lord and Miller’s work, is a reminder that a movie can be fussily crafted in the name of simply being fun, a lesson that more filmmakers should heed in this age of didactic tent poles.

…It’s good. It’s certainly smart, and like semi-related “properties” before it — the Toy Story films, or even “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” — the film insinuates itself into the only classy high road left for this sort of high capitalist kiddie art. It displays its sheepish ambivalence about the fact that its raison d’être is the promotion and sale of toys.

‘More clever than funny’ would be my overall verdict – but it’s hard to argue with its ceaseless inventiveness… What ensues is (yes) a hodgepodge – but a clever one. The pop-culture references are witty, and indeed this sarcastic, narcissistic Batman is much more fun than Christian Bale’s mopey Batman. The crammed-solid visuals aren’t exactly elegant (try The Grand Budapest Hotel for that), but they’re inexhaustible.
