A flawed film but nonetheless bold one, since the denouement is laden with risks: the social ostracism and blunt revelation of animal-like instincts is far-fetched (the community outside the family is torn apart), but the film is quite nicely shot and paced, has very good acting (Kudryashova is a strong character and Tsyganov's Bardem-like looks and plight is quite touching) and a interesting moral/mystical message.
A film with a beautiful beginning and beautiful ending and a story with a beautiful idea. Unfortunately this idea is visualized by using cheap ways of storytelling - cross-dressing a man as a woman in 2018 seems like easy sensationalism and just looking for festival attention instead of trying to get your point across in more playful and interesting ways. Hope that everyone can find healing through finding themselves
Playing between symbolism (acceptance of/failure to accept death socially seen as a weakness, and people's rude and judegemental reaction to one showing one's own softer side seen as homophobia) and bed-time tale of magic - Merkulova and Chupov's movie is well driven and well told, without narration (not just plot) holes and badly filmed scenes. It's harsh and touching, showing how 'weakness' still is judged.
Venice at Home Vol.12: "The Man Who Surprised Everyone" would be more interesting & meaningful if its directors focused delicately on caring & affection for a protagonist's aging body which's invaded by terminal cancer. They can use transvestite as only sensationalism disguised gloomy realism, which vitiates this movie into a petty one. All the actors are good but it can't save its not-so-good quality.
