Sinopse

With its setting of dark alleys, deserted canals and random encounters, White Nights may well be Visconti’s ‘gayest’ film – even though it contains no homosexual characters or situations. It is perhaps the most evocative film ever about the gay phenomenon of ‘cruising’ and the nocturnal city as a realm of boundless sexual fantasy.

[In the video essay,] I present single wide shots from White Nights’ sets, overlaid with reflections by Visconti and his cinematographer Giuseppe Rotunno. I then reintroduce audio from Death in Venice’s debate on art to set up the final passage of the video, which moves from the composed, pictorial beauty of Visconti’s mise en scène to the torrid high emotion of his characters.
