It manages to feel both antiquarian and newfangled, an unsettling marriage of state-of-the-art moviemaking and classical Holmes tropes that’s well attuned to the evocative, eerie feel of a library after hours.
Remembered watching this on TV long ago... strange in some parts, but it really showed how the great detective & his partner started their whole work together - this was made shortly before THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE (talk about Sherlock). Couldn't believe Levinson directed this plus Spielberg producing (was little like Indiana Jones), yet I love do Sherlock & would be interested watching this again in the future.
A fun rendition of Holmes myth, with its Dickensian names for its characters or the same child spirit brought by Steven Spielberg produced film. It's always nice to see Holmes and Watson during their school years (although it's non-canon), having a crush and how it changed Holmes into a cold and calculating detective.
Oh, and this was John Lasseter's debut in making CG character too. A milestone for ILM and Pixar.
