Africa- it may seem- is the mysterious untamed “dark continent” of strange superstitious customs, drum beats, great deserts, rivers and jungles, spectacular scenery, wild beasts, corrupt and primitive rulers, rich in minerals, big game and human cargo, and ripe for astonishing exploration and the enlightening benefits of Western civilisation
