In Dublin in 1922, Gypo Nolan, a poor ex-army officer, wants to leave Dublin with his girlfriend Katie, who has been reduced to prostitution, but they need 20 pounds to sail to America. Gypo decides to betray his former comrade Frankie to the British authorities for a 20 pound reward.
