I thought this film would be a slick thriller instead, it evolved into the unfolding of a Shakespearean tragedy, thanks to the naturalistic style of David Michôd and low-key performances that get under the skin (especially Jacki Weaver's, I completely dread her serpentine matriarch character).
Animal Kingdom is one of the best Australian made films. It shows us a dark and twisted side to the underworld and makes us question who is really at the top of the kingdom. A fantastic script, superb acting and visually pleasing cinematography. The film is more than a story about a crime family.
A masterclass on how to direct a thriller. Incredibly tense film, that kept me gripped throughout with its complex, fully fleshed out characters, fantastic dialogue and a sense of atmosphere created through the films excellent use of music and camerawork. Maintains a strong sense of realism throughout - the characters comes across as real people rather than a hodge podge of cliches, whilst the plot seems very fresh
Just viewed Animal Kingdom, what a strong piece of work. Michôd portrays the darkness and suspense in a brilliant way, leaving any viewer on the edge of your seat, with kudos to the accompanying score. The Australian cast deliver a strong performance from the lead to the minor roles (hats off to the casting director). Five stars to this crime thriller.
One of the best aussie films I've seen in a decade and one of the most taut thrillers I've seen in as long. This is a must see for every aussie out there - we need to be supporting local movies like this one.
Good crime drama that however is not as good as its reputation. While the acting and production work was very good I thought that the narrative was a bit meandering and streched out in parts. Strong opening and ending but the middle was bloated and a bit aimless for me.
