BALLET MÉCANIQUE

Directed by Fernand Léger, Dudley Murphy
France, 1924
Avant-Garde, Silent, Short

Synopsis

A pulsing, kaleidoscope of images set to an energetic soundtrack. This is a world in motion, dominated by mechanical and repetitive images, with a few moments of solitude in a garden.

Our take

A true avant-garde classic, this Dadaist delight was co-directed by the great artist Fernand Léger and filmmaker Dudley Murphy (with a little help from Man Ray!). This spinning, hypnotic ballet between parrots, eyes, and industrial cogs beautifully melds the distinction between man and machine.
