Sinopsis

Witold and his companion Fuchs are staying at Madame Woytis’ guesthouse when they discover a sparrow hanged in the woods. Reality soon mutates into a whirlwind of tension, histrionics, foreboding omens, and surrealistic logic as Witold becomes obsessed with Madame’s daughter Lena.

What does it all mean? Wrong question. And it’s probably absurd to even ask. Better, instead, to fully submit to Žuławski’s last symphony of insanity and paranoia, which ends, cheekily enough, with a gag reel (quite the meta final statement). His movies allow you some blissful madness in a world brainwashed by sanity.

The story doesn’t so much develop as it shatters and reforms, refracted through the student’s demented, obsessive perspective… The frenzy and wordplay from the text don’t always translate precisely to the movie, but that hardly seems the point: in tribute to one of his favorite writers, Zulawski fully adopts Gombrowicz’s mischief, with results that careen and stumble across the screen.

A wild adaptation of the Wiltold Gombrowicz novel of the same name, Cosmos is an appropriately chaotic, bright, eerie, and crazed work… The film’s animation of the text can be sensorially overwhelming as scenes are rendered into relentless tableaux of action and noise. But this too-muchness feels at home in Zulawski’s hands, and he channels it into a captivating, annoying, masterpiece.
