A little over-long but contains some singularly disturbing moments. Also, without 'Don Juan' there would clearly be no 'Faust' so it is a necessary part of the Švankmajer canon for that reason alone! There is sheer aesthetic pleasure to be had in the painted backdrops and the lovingly/fetishistically crafted facsimiles of traditional Czech puppets.
Cinematography was a bit sloppy and the lighting could’ve been improved in a few areas. But overall, this was one of the most stunningly imaginative and joyously demented bursts if creativity I’ve seen in a good long while.
