This is before the T.Scott era that I love, and is not quite as good as the great films of the 2000s that he made. Still, you can see the beginnings of the style that he would hone to even greater heights in the near future. A very good paranoia-filled movie.
I waiver between total fear of us all being under constant regulated surveillance and the opinion that governments are too inept to do much with the fact. This might have played a formative role in the former. It wizzes along with tremendous energy, style and prescience, but hampered a little by the silly finale of convenience, and the fact Smith is a tad comfortable with the ride.
Amazing how a movie made 15 years ago is so relevant to the present. It sort of predicted Snowden's NSA revelations. Telecommunications, security, privacy act... the surveillance society. Life imitates art?
While a bit dated technology-wise, the concept is still relevant today in one of Scott's better thrillers. Smith and Hackman do good work here but keep an eye out for some future well-known stars: Jason Lee, Jack Black, and Seth Green to name a few.
I'm not surprised at the 4 fans this film has, but I saw this in theaters when I was sixteen. This thing gave me nightmares that the government was controlling everything. Then it turned out that it was in fact the corporations doing this. Ah, simpler times...
