In industrial Switzerland, the problems of a married couple in collapse intertwine with the experiences of a country girl. Denise abandons her husband, her job, and the city to work on a farm in the countryside. Meanwhile, Isabelle leaves the countryside to become a sex worker in the city.

JLG marked a return to narrative form with this self-reflective work, which he called his “second first film.” Starring French singer Jacques Dutronc as a director named Godard, Isabelle Huppert as a sex worker, and Nathalie Baye as a fiery woman, this is a comic pondering on life, love, and art.
