Both evocative and faithful in its depiction of the famed French singer’s lascivious life, “Gainsbourg (vie heroique)” offers up a feast of memorable chansons and an almost endless parade of drop-dead-gorgeous muses.
One of the best comic book adaptations Ive seen so far. Visual gusto and musical verve makes this more than the average biopic. In fact less attention is paid to the specifics of Gainsbourg's life than in playing with the imagery and sounds of his persona's. Not the post modern exploration of celebrity in "Im Not There", but the whimsicle fantasy of MIchel Gondry and Sylvain Chomet, set to some fine, fine tunes.
The insights I gained from the film, if any? "Love goes astray throughout life," and "life is chance working against destiny," per his lyrics and film dialog, respectively. Not all of the elements work, and the film would benefit from a shorter run time, but by and large I enjoyed this. Like the director, maybe I also "prefer Gainsbourg's lies to his truth, his dreams to his reality." Cool puppets.
A life ill-defined... An all too flitting account of Gainsbourg's 'life' told in a series of abbreviated motifs and thus offering little in the way of critical analysis or penetration. Instead we're left with a tick-list that timidly wallows in the shallows of detail before descending down a narrative spiral into an eventual whimper. The device of the alter-ego merely offers leftfield distraction rather than insight.
Definitely an interesting approach, but did it really have to rush so much to compress everything to feature-length? I understand that the film wasn't meant to linger on misery, but I'm sure Gainsbourg cared more about his parents than to have all of five seconds dedicated to their passing. Nonetheless, the film has got me trying to complete my Gainsbourg music collection.
