Surprisingly, I was really looking forward to this as a follow-up to the newest Godzilla reboot, which handled everything with great care. This was a CGI-driven disaster with no humanity or story to speak of. Even the monster fights were overly complicated, hard on the eyes, and confusing.
One of the most incoherent films I have seen in years. This is bad- really bad. And I feel especially bad as a fan of the Godzilla franchise and as someone who has admired Michael Dougherty films in the past. Just sad!
You'll notice within the first ten minutes that the solemnity director Gareth Edwards brought to "Godzilla" is gone, long gone; while that film felt clearly positioned as Warner Brother's 2014 tentpole summer movie, "King of the Monsters" is instead assembled with the kind of boilerplate competency of your average MCU flick or a non-Michael Bay "Transformers," farmed out to the lesser tier special effects houses.
Dougherty's addition to the 'monster verse' fully delivers on the promise of the first two entries with this big budget monster mash that doesn't skimp on neither effects nor drama. The four main creatures are all well designed and rendered while paying proper homage to the original models. All hail the king indeed.
Even the big guy himself seems to be phoning it in in this laughable CGI monster mash, so mired in earnest cliches it makes the cut-rate-Michael Bay handling look good. Don't settle for less, demand the original.
This attempts a classic action film but lacks any heart. The trailer paints a visual spectacle, like a mythological oil painting, which does appear in the giant fight scenes, but is hampered by a drab human story with too much screen time which spends half the time trying to make you care about crap characters and half expositing useless mythology. I'll take a whole film of just kaiju with zero dialogue.
