"When it was all done, I didn't want to incorporate the short into the movie. But I couldn't decide how I wanted it to go. I wanted to play the short in front of the movie, but not always. Sometimes I preferred to watch the movie without the short. It became a puzzle to me." https://vimeo.com/77335572
You may (or may not) know that I am a huge fan of Wes Anderson so really I love all his films, but this one in particular struck me. It's so pleasing to watch with the pretty colours and neat camera movements and the song 'Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)' is just too beautiful for words. Even more impressive is the fact that all the greatness has been packed into 13 short minutes.
This was the first Wes Anderson film I ever saw. I like this even more having seen Darjeeling; which this film outclasses. It's a perfect short film. The cinematography, the performances, hinted at but not expounded upon plot, set design; all right on the money. To the mongrels who focus primarily on Natalie's nude scene: shame on you! That's the least interesting thing about the film!!
So beautiful and heart warming despite the layer of hurt and disappointment in their relationship - it added complexity to Jack's character and plotline that had felt a little step below Francis or Peter's in Darjeeling. The rest is, as ever, Wes Anderson and gorgeous.
