Jack Reacher suffers from an ambiguous tone and a main character that could use a little more flaws. Cruise cowboy-ing his away through Pittsburg is cool but a little vulnerability would have added a much needed layer. Still, there a few details that make this film compelling, such as casting Herzog as a villain and the quasi-realistic, drawn-out, Bullitt-esque chase sequence (the car won't start? I'm all for it).
Formulaic and predictable, but never an idiotic run-of-the-mill action movie of the week, a rather well written and correctly paced old school thriller similar to what Peter Yates, Don Siegel and Walter Hill did for the genre, unpretentious and solid entertainment.
Cruise delivers once again in this enjoyable murder mystery/conspiracy. The plot is well paced and the action is kept simple and effective. Herzogs bad guy is awesome but seems to belong in another world almost. His cold menace does not really hit home because of the movie's light and sometimes humorous tone. Therein lies also the movie's problem, it is too funny. I lack a more serious mood and grittier feel.
The main problem with the film is the casting of Tom Cruise who just seems so far outside his comfort zone to border on the edges of self parody. That isn't the only problem with this overbaked and under plotted holiday trifle. We also have the lack of believable villians, the unbelievable defence attorney and the so obvious crooked cop. Almost worth seeing for Werner Herzog..but only almost. Don't look for a sequel.
This year Tron: Legacy awards of What is Wrong With You People. Difference is this time I don't listen to you people and go lifted my ass to the nearest cinema and regret is not to be found. Pulpy entertainment at its best. Silly (but more of "girlfriend": silly). Tight script. and Tom Cruise. Yes. No matter how many silent and how many little Lichstenstein film I've watched, no denying that this man is a movie star.
