Simone Signoret plays Madame Rosa, Auschwitz survivor and former prostitute, now retired for "aesthetic reasons", she runs an illicit orphanage for the children of other prostitutes. Precious and bittersweet.
An unforgettable performance by the great Simone Signoret. The humour in the novel has unfortunately been cast aside and the tone has the usual doom and gloom realism often found in 70's French cinema, so it is preferable to forget Romain Gary's book and focus on Signoret layered acting.
It will mostly be remembered for the great performance of Simone Signoret. It is not possible to find the humor and intensity of Romain Gary's novel. It is good to see cultural and ethnic aspects but the director rarely focuses other dynamics of the novel. The child actor playing Momo is not satisfactory and the side characters are depicted superficially.
