The way the husband goes from a dull, control-freak urbanite to a bellowing, stick-wielding barbarian by the end is gold! Plus the mega-cringeworthy sing-along to "We want to see the zoo..."! And the pig doing the "72 chews" thing over the closing credits! Just watch it.
Leigh in light and obvious mode (a central character named Pratt sets the tone) ticking off his usual lefty targets, but it's performed with such sweet observation and nuance one can forgive any number of hang-ups in this breezy play that's almost as fresh as the air they diasterously seek [the appalling holiday practically a sub-genre in 1970s British Television and film - witness most sit-com spin-offs].
Brilliant! Hilarious! Mike Leigh at his best. Actor Roger Sloman is a genius. Wilderness and civilization, sociology, class struggle and authority all perfectly pitched and played. 84 min. of open sky imagery and absolute comedy perfection.
3.7 stars. A pitch-perfect acidic playlet on location! Nimbly achieves the squirmy portraiture many of the dark BBC comedy series of early 00s would repeat ('Nighty Night'; 'Marion and Geoff') or perfect ('Peep Show'; 'Human Remains'). The damn songs are real ear worms though!
