It is, in a way an extensive sociological study of these sister-wives, who, with nothing else to do, compete for the attention of their husband, and the little perks that come with it. Such is the reasoning behind their actions that have tragic and drastic consequences. Beautifully shot, complex characters, and a wonderful cast that keep the viewer entranced in the story of these women.
Not only gorgeously shot, but a "creeper" of a film that will slowly, methodically lure you into the story and not let you go all the way through its crushing climax. This has to be the best Yimou film I have seen and one that I will be watching again in the near future.
Stunningly shot inquiry into women's plight in a hermetically closed patriarchal universe. Yimou ingeniously avoids close-up shots on the patriarch's face and thus de-individualizes male oppression. With a splendid Gong Li women's subordination is elegantly ritualized, yet this makes the surface equally hard to bear as appearances turn out to be deceptive. Impeccable also as a formal exercise this is a masterpiece!
Absolutely gorgeous use of color. The cinematography is awesome. The entire film is also quite amazing with some amazing performances, especially from Gong Li. Highly recommended. Yimou is a fantastic director.
