An exquisite in aesthetic terms rural drama that travereses with force the entire gamut of the shades of red. Commingling local rituals, a passionate love affair, female emancipation and nationalist struggle (against the Japanese), Yimou succeeds eventually in providing a dramatically intense film with first-class acting and with equally vivid colors burning the screen and the senses. Not his best, but a runner-up!
90% superb storytelling, 10 % propaganda so not quite a masterpiece but scenes that stay in your memory like the journey of the bride. The last part of the film, with the arrival of the Japanese in the picture, is a bit less interesting although the mise-en-scene is first-class throughout the whole movie. Highly recommended.
35mm. A woman makes it in a patriarchical society after the patriarch (that we never see, like the story teller) dies. I don't agree with the reviewer calling this film propaganda. A real treat seeing projected on film, this is among the most stunning cinematography I have ever seen. 4+
