I must admit to having a weakness for inspirational sports dramas. Looking at this film coldly and objectively reveals it to be highly manipulative and obvious. However, on days when cynical remove will not get you through this movie inspires, lifting one's spirits with it's simple story of underdog triumph. Sean Austin is perfectly cast as the impassioned and striving Ruettiger. Jerry Goldsmith's score is stirring.
Rudy is like going to grandma's house, so full of saccharine sweetness you might find the urge to wretch at times, but overall warm, and comforting. Every once in a while I want a stupid feel good movie, and this is exactly that. Not intelligent, not deep, not revolutionary. Just something to turn on when you're in the dumps.
