Les bonnes femmes Regizat de Claude Chabrol

Recenzii ale criticilor

Les bonnes femmes is probably Chabrol’s most pessimistic work, harping relentlessly on vulgarity, boorishness, and cruelty. Focusing on four young woman who work from nine to seven at an electrical appliance store in Paris, the film offers a definitive look at what they want from life and how poorly they fare in their aspirations — culminating in a remarkable, ambiguous final sequence set in a dancehall, leaving everything up to the audience’s troubled imagination.

Chabrol’s satire is too savage for comfort, and so we react by calling Chabrol brutal, vulgar, and just plain horrid. I have done so myself in the past, but after a third viewing, Les Bonnes Femmes suddenly reveals itself as a work of extraordinary compassion, almost a fifth Gospel of four women, essentially and unironically good women, crucified in close-up at the climax of their disillusionment.

Ce spun cinefilii?

  • El Biffo's rating of the film Les bonnes femmes

Essential Nouvelle Vague. Chabrol is great, I want to see all of his films, but what really makes it for me is the photography by Henri Decae. It is his eye that gave the unmistakable look of films such as The 400 Blows. Bob le Flambeur, and Elevator to the Gallows, all of which have my highest recommendation.

  • Renton47's rating of the film Les bonnes femmes

Does such a convincing job highlighting the limited economic and romantic options afforded the femmes that we understand the appeal of a psycho biker stalker. Its revelatory ending the natural extension of the modest dramas it captures while flitting from character to character, which contain their share of joy but also bear witness to the constant violence of men's entitlement. Audience laughter totally upended.

  • Not A Sexy Vampire's rating of the film Les bonnes femmes

Hard to know what to make of this. Read a few articles that argue this is a feminist film which posits that romantic fantasies are dangerous in a patriarchal society. That's true, but the film does a disservice by making the four women shockingly enigmatic outside of their love lives. Still, this is a brutal messy look at male violence and dangerous heteronormativity. That horrifying pool scene alone will haunt me.

  • Duncan Gray's rating of the film Les bonnes femmes

A very strange and mysterious film, mixing many tones and not fully revealing itself until you wake up the next day with the final images still in your head. As a tribute to flings, fantasies, and falling for beautiful strangers, it is appropriately both terrifying and giddy with joy, and likely to confuse people who think a film should be one or the other. Would make a great double bill with STRANGER BY THE LAKE.

  • Zac Weber's rating of the film Les bonnes femmes

A staple French New Wave film. Like many of his colleagues and contemporaries, Chabrol was a critic for Cahiers du cinéma. This movie is especially memorable for its dance scenes, the free-spirited females at the heart of the narrative, and the unseen ending that lends itself to multiple interpretations. Essential viewing for those interested in the "nouvelle vague."

  • This is Jake Kath's rating of the film Les bonnes femmes

Romanticism is cornered with bitter undercurrents in this deeply sad slice of parisian life flick. By the end, we witness beautiful lives nearly destroyed but there is vague sense of hope. The only complaint I have is that I wanted to know more about the girls. They seemed so pretty but their lives were so hollow. I probably love this movie but I'll have to return to it to see.

  • Neither/Nor's rating of the film Les bonnes femmes

Tonal ambivalence, significant moments passing under open vaults of incidental perspective. Chabrol deepens cinematic fault lines without a catastrophic maelstrom of New Wave flippancy and insouciance: a partial break, like Antonioni's earliest; Les Bonnes Femmes pairs well with Le Amiche. Finale of courage and despair; one for youthful emotion, the other for its realization in doom or inconclusiveness.

  • Vahid Mortazavi's rating of the film Les bonnes femmes

Even with its predictable storyline and not so intelligent way the plot reveals itself by, the movie's power lies in the nightmarish mood and atmosphere which depicts both banality and cruelty of everyday life. I like to quote Jonathan Rosenbaum about swimming pool sequence: which shows "the difference between joking and killing, or between banal horror and ultimate horror, is sometimes only one of degree".
