This is the second viewing. In my opinion, THE IDES OF MARCH succeed to capture the dark side of politics. Especially - American politics. Honestly, I just knew a little about their political systems. To me, it wasn't hard to understand the political terms in this movie. THE IDES OF MARCH is exciting, thrilling, and well-written. Actor/Director George Clooney made this movie with a solid direction. A very good movie.
Clooney has a knack for bringing all the right actors together. Every actor in this film is on point especially Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamatti. Gosling has perfected the art of staring pensively off screen.
The first and last shot of the film show Gosling's character about to speak into a void: first an empty Ohio Auditorium & the other to an oblivious national television audience. In the beginning we see a sprightly young man; by the end we see someone who has sacrificed every real possible human relationship around him. Shot well though at times spelling it out too much IDES is a political blockbuster with resonance.
Read the screenplay not too long back when it was still called 'Farragut North'. Fun ride throughout with some interesting dialogue and insight into the dirty side of politics; yet, at times the plot developments seemed quite predictable ... the ending was a bit anticlimactic. Also, I understand the script was adapted from a stage-play based on the 2004 D. primary campaign of Howard Dean. That element has been nixed.
