It’s a slow-burner that seethes with anger and Michôd does everything he can to deglamourise the outpourings of splenetic violence. It’s rare that the camera captures death in grisly close-up, or accentuates acts of murder with editing or sound design.

What elevates The Rover above these B movies are the wonderful cinematography by talented newcomer Natasha Braier and the assured, measured way Michôd depicts his future world.

Michôd’s worldview verges on fashionable pessimism, which is another way of saying that his ostensible character studies play like excuses to indulge in matter-of-fact violence. Unexpected shots to the head punctuate The Rover like a teenager snapping her bubblegum, and they soon become monotonous.

Ce spun cinefilii?

  • Güattarii's rating of the film The Rover

  • Christopher Taylor's rating of the film The Rover

Space and silence are used excellently in this post apocalyptic existential piece about a man relentless to get back his stolen car. It introduces an excellent dynamic between a man with nothing and a man akin to a lost puppy, and that dynamic beautifully and simply draws us in to the eventual resolution of the film's main conflict.

  • Giles J Davis's rating of the film The Rover

If Under The Skin represents man's carnal downfall, then The Rover represents man's materialistic downfall. Like a precursor to The Road, The Rover lets the scales fall from your eyes in what very much could happen to Western civilisation in the coming future. Phenomenally atmospheric, incredible sound and score (with surprise numbers from Tortoise) and beautifully shot. . Highly recommended.

  • MATTEO BITTANTI's rating of the film The Rover

Possibly set in the same fictional universe as The Road - with Guy Pierce as the fil rouge between the two films. Don't be fooled: the post-apocalytpic theme ("Ten Years After The Collapse") is a mere decoy. The Rover is a neo-western imbued with road movie motifs. Above all, it is a pleasant surprise.

  • Zachary T.'s rating of the film The Rover

The grimness the battered landscapes and Guy Pearce's flaming eyes communicate comes as no surprise -- but the candid moments of affecting, offbeat humor do. "The Rover" is ultimately a very human film, and not exactly the distant, cold examination of violence I expected it to be. It actually earns its darkness, through intimacy and compassion for its characters.

  • J. O.'s rating of the film The Rover

As expected, Michôd delivers a searing portrait of our world in a bleak and possible future. We follow men without purpose; one guns down stranger after stranger on a blood-soaked path of vengeance, while is in tow. The pace is slow and meditative, the performances were brooding and restrained, the cinematography is scorched, and the soundtrack is haunting. An unforgiving mood piece about life after the end of life.

  • Nicholas Gregory's rating of the film The Rover

I originally thought the ending scene that tells Pierce's reasoning beyond a MacGuffin rendered the film without an artistic focus, and was a too sentimental device. Yet, I now view its symbolic reason different than its often effect on the audience. Human life has reached a nadir when the reason is revealed. Humanity is now nothing more than a shaggy dog story. And all this killing is indeed pointless.

  • Palmat's rating of the film The Rover

This movie really fondled many of my cinematic sweet spots. Slow burn narrative with great dialogue - check! Guy Pearce - check! Post apocalyptic setting - check! Awesome soundtrack and score - check! Great photo and settings - check! Haunted anti-hero - check! Brutal and unforgiving violence - check! Moody and doomy tone - check! Neo-noir/western vibes - check! "This-is-not-going-to-end-well-feeling" - check!
