Polanski takes the remote home invasion theme from his brilliant Cul-de-sac & filters it through Alice in Wonderland; creating in the process a post-modern meta-movie tinged with absurdism. Where it fails is in its lack of a compelling protagonist. Sydne Rome is let down by this sexist non-character who exists only to satisfy the male gaze or to be humiliated by supporting characters, which Polanski seems to endorse.
Some sympathetic moments (in all its weirdness) can't save this messy alice in wonderland all'italiana, or a la polanski more exactly.
I know the charm is supposed to be on its absurdist situations, but I just didn't find it funny, rather incredibly boring and uninsteresting.
Sort of enjoyable, but more than a bit creepy. The opulence of Carlo Ponti's Italian villa & art collection is what lingers most in the mind afterward. Swatting the fly on the Francis Bacon painting is a good joke though!
Seriously, what? Why was this made? What is the purpose of anything I just saw? Is it supposed to be a satirized American perception of Mediterranean suaveness? Or just an improvisation exercise on grounds of Felliniesque theatricality? Well, wherever it might be heading, apart from a handful of intriguing moments it is a mess of a movie severely lacking in inspiration, and impossible to swallow as a whole.
I love this crazy and strange movie. It's one of my favourites of all time! I probably already watched it for about 10 times. A strange thing is that I don't like the end of this film. Not because it's bad, but just because it's the end.
A comedy devoid of laughs isn’t good news, but Che? isn’t all uninteresting. There are some remarkable scenes, eg. Mastroianni spanked while dressed in a tiger skin. The story - if not the whole movie - has a similar function as stories do in porn movies: it’s an excuse for fucking around. Sydney Rome’s gorgeous and half-naked in almost every frame, so at least those aroused by female beauty will enjoy the two hours.
