Zabriskie Point Regizat de Michelangelo Antonioni
Today it feels like a monumental film, one that expertly captures the surreal chaos of America in the 1960s with scenes of revolutionary meetings, police crackdowns, Death Valley orgies, and that sublime, unforgettable climax — in which the eye-popping detonation of an elegant mountain home is replayed and replayed and eventually replaced by the slow-motion explosion of all sorts of material goods, from refrigerators to clothing racks to TVs to books.

It’s unfortunately more timely than ever in light of the American public’s unfortunate belief that by electing a millionaire, money will rain from the heavens and the land might become the sole province of white men. The Antoinioni hero’s search for solace and self-annihilation sometimes feels the only sane response to our increasingly insane world.

Antonioni’s poetics involve a telescoping of not simply the world of objects and their place in the everyday but the very concrete richness of objects in their materiality and their transformation through time and space. For Antonioni, it’s all about tracing the line, the curve, and the tone, and the process of re-figuration.

Ce spun cinefilii?

  • Duncan Gray's rating of the film Zabriskie Point

Terrible acting and clumsy political pandering lie within. But visiting ZP isn't a chore for a new generation, in part because Antonioni's (highly evocative) stranger's-eye-view of 60s America can mirror our own, but also because we see which parts still rhyme—and which we hope to have learned from. It's nice to see him warm to casual Eros; you will, however, learn more than you like about Mark Frechette's leg hair.

  • Jason's rating of the film Zabriskie Point

Zabriskie Point colonizes a place and time. I thought these kids were heroic when I was a kid. They are actually pretty despicable. I find it very unlikely that American radio in 1970 would play John Fahey's "Dance of Death" (in the manner demonstrated here). In the end the movie feels like something divined, inevitable, discovered sitting there waiting in Southern California, and almost sorta perfect.

  • josé neves's rating of the film Zabriskie Point

Cinematography by Alfio Contini. "Desire" list. I haven't seen Francesco Rosi's "Uomini contro", so this is the film that brought me closer to Mark Frechette, a comet that crossed the cinema to die a little later, like a possible character of the counterculture, that this film so well registered and represents. But the approach is definitive: with Clémenti, no other man incarnated it as well, and so beautifully.

  • Joe Hackman's rating of the film Zabriskie Point

Antonioni at his best is on a whole different level, and this film falls under that distinction. The shot design is, of course, perfect, characters often juxtaposed against giant advertisements in LA or towering desert mountains. The acting is not the best but it doesn't detract too much from Antonioni's strong sense of visual purpose. Worth your time.

  • nrh's rating of the film Zabriskie Point

Perhaps the best "bad" movie I've ever seen. The acting is just as strange as MA's other films, and the script has a wonderful sense of the American language, in all its flatness and peculiarity. Not to mention that this may be one of the most visually dazzling films ever made - there are shots in this film so dazzling (from a technical level alone) that you wonder how they could have ever been managed.

  • João Eça's rating of the film Zabriskie Point

How to be a polite hippy according to Antonioni: -DO NOT SMOKE WEED -STEAL A PLANE AND THEN RETURN IT PAINTED WITH NICE COLOURS -PRETEND TO KILL A COP BUT DON'T REALLY KILL HIM -GET SHOT WHILE DOING A GOOD DEED -MAKE AN ORGY IN THE DESERT WITH YOUR CLOTHES ON -AND FINALLY BLOW UP AMERICA WITH THE POWER OF YOUR MIND (AND IN SLOW MOTION)

  • Subterranean Cinema's rating of the film Zabriskie Point

Very underrated, with some eye popping visuals and a fantastic soundtrack. The explosive finale to Pink Floyd music is classic! Dont believe the Medved brothers, because while this film isnt 5 star perfect, its pretty close.

  • Kyle Lewis's rating of the film Zabriskie Point

Is Antonioni the most pretentious or brilliant filmmaker of the 20th century? I am definitely leaning toward the brilliant side but I can see why so many despise or just don't get his films. Like Godard you can easily go through long passages of his films bored to tears. But if you work with him and don't expect the film to think for you or even be entertained to much you will be rewarded.
