Sisters Are Doing it For Themselves: Independent Women on Film

I recently sat down and watched Jeanne Dielman. After sitting there for the nearly 3 and a half hours, I was entranced. This was an excellent film and it stayed with me for days. It kept popping into my mind at the most random times. It inspired me to collate a list of my favourite films depicting independent women as the central characters. So often, mainstream movies tend to relegate the woman to the background or put her in a partnership with her male co-star.
