Sinopsis

Adapted from the 1951 non-fiction account by psychoanalyst Georges Devereux, the film follows the true story of Picard, a Plains Indian of the Blackfeet nation, who underwent psychotherapy with Devereux as he returned from WWII and began experiencing unexplainable symptoms shortly thereafter.

Părerea noastră

Director Arnaud Desplechin has a new film in Cannes this year, inspiring us to revive one of his strangest yet most compelling melodramas. A poignant character portrait of a unique cross-cultural friendship, the film is also a tremendous showcase for actors Benicio Del Toro and Mathieu Amalric.

The mere description of the movie (a title at the start of which declares, “This is a true story”) suggests the remarkably complex interweave of subjects and themes that flow through it: war, religion, exile, colonial politics, the American West, the medical mystery, and, of course, psychoanalysis itself—which brings in its wake the skein of personal, emotional, and familial experiences that it unravels.

Del Toro and Amalric’s one-note performances (the former resignedly shellshocked, the latter agitatedly servile) suddenly take on an anguished grandeur. The duo’s many analytic interactions come to feel like arias; Desplechin’s films often have this intimately, unsettlingly operatic feel, as if the camera were recording a performance for proscenium at too close a range. Everything is said, but little is understood. How many times, the movie asks, can we avoid reading between the lines?

While onscreen therapy is hardly a novelty in the era of “The Sopranos,” “In Treatment” and David Cronenberg’s “A Dangerous Method,” few films have focused so intently on the minutiae of psychoanalysis as Desplechin does here — an uncompromising strategy that will undoubtedly distance some viewers while drawing others further in.
