Ma is a striking modern-day vision of Mother Mary’s pilgrimage through the eyes of Ma (played by Celia Rowlson-Hall), a woman who must venture across the scorched landscape of the American Southwest to fulfill her destiny.
A stunning debut by dancer and choreographer Celia Rowlson-Hall, Ma takes the Virgin Mary and radically re-imagines her in a contemporary and dialog-free story of archetypal relationships and movement through an American landscape of desert, motels and Las Vegas. Unconventional and risk-taking.
Lots of good ideas. Some bad ones too. Seems to lack a certain discipline in the gaps between dancer movement, still-photoesque composition, and wordless, deconstructed Madonna narrative. Still, lots of good ideas. I was reminded of 1960's Philippe Garrel films played by a robotic mannequin cast.
This was probably the weirdest movie I have ever seen...very interesting. But I'm not gunna give it a bad rating just because it's weird... because it doesn't mean that it's bad. It has good cinematography and good acting because I'm sure the actors took a look at the script and was like do I seriously have to do this?? I also appreciate nude scenes in movies. It is natural and there was no plastic surgery involved.
