Like millions of other couples, Mounir and Murielle fall in love. Like millions of other couples, Mounir and Murielle have children. But unlike them, they accept to give up their autonomy by agreeing to live with Mounir’s well off adoptive father.
Belgian auteur Joachim Lafosse directs this tragedy—based off of actual events—regarding the oppressive powers of familial bonds. Lead actress Émilie Dequenne deservedly took home the Un Certain Regard award for Best Actress from the Cannes Film Festival for her revelatory, bereaved turn. Riveting.
Harrowing. Feels similar in tone to a Haneke film, particularly in the domestic violence themes. Leads up with well done power struggles and sense of impending doom to an absolutely killer ending. Not a film I would suggest to anyone (for fear of being seen as a sociopath) but worth watching. Puts me off having kids
I decided to dive into the film not knowing anything about the story or subject matter. A worthwhile watch; great performances from the entire cast and overall a good film that sensitively observes the complexities of relationships and a very strange situation.
Intelligent writing, well formed characters and mature execution all add considerable weight to this uneasy and topical study of infanticide within a complex family unit. It's wonderful to see Arestrup and Rahir back together again in vastly different roles to Un Prophete. Some of the Moroccan actors are a little less convincing but this is well worth a watch. This is an amazing film but NOT a 'family film'. If any kids watch this they will probably be traumatised for life! It's a harrowing watch, based on a true story. It has the intensity of a Greek tragedy within a modern domestic setting where the combination of 'fatal flaws' is lethal. Direction, acting, script superb.
Excellent performances. Great to see Rahim playing against his "Un Prophete" type. Devastating plotline, but certainly all too commonplace a situation for women. Within the patriarchy, marriage means more than a mate; it brings an entire family structure into which they are inserted with frequently little to no say over major financial, medical, educational, and living conditions. We children often bear the scars.
This is the darkest story I have seen I have been traumatized ,by this movie, real life story well played but you need to be strong and have some distractions to watch it ! Otherwise you feel deeply sad and for at least few months good luck!
