Miloš Forman, The Early Years

MUBI Special

We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of legendary Czech New Wave pioneer, two-time academy award winner Miloš Forman, and we want to celebrate his genius and legacy with a double bill of his trailblazing pre-Hollywood works—presented in all-new digital restorations with remastered picture and sound thanks to our friends at Second Run. Both Audition and A Blonde in Love prefigure the themes, subversive spirit, and masterful balance of bitterness and humour that would become Forman’s signature touch in his posterior critical and commercial hits Amadeus and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

A Blonde in Love

Miloš Forman Czechoslovakia, 1965

Earning Forman his first Oscar nomination, A Blonde in Love boasts a masterful balance between charm and poignancy. Throwing invaluable light on 60s Eastern Europe contradictions, the film remains a beautiful prelude to the rebelliousness that inhabits Amadeus and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Audition

Miloš Forman Czechoslovakia, 1963

Truly saddened by the passing of two-time academy award winner Miloš Forman, we want to celebrate his legacy with a double bill of his trailblazing pre-Hollywood works. Officially launching the fecund Czech New Wave, Audition hints at the auteur’s theatre roots and devotion to the language of music.
