It’s a black-and-white movie filmed in color, a choice that robs it of any period flavor, but given its 50s pedigree of social comment, such a nuance is hardly necessary. Director Tony Kaye wants to say something about what produces a skinhead today, and though he doesn’t succeed fully in this endeavor, he does take us a significant part of the way.

  • El Biffo's rating of the film American History X

Some great things (Ed Furlong and Ed Norton), and some not so great (some of the supporting actors, and the horrible American-style mood music), but definitely worth a watch if you like a good tragedy and don't want subtitles.

  • dionysus67's rating of the film American History X

Extremely overrated drama about white supremacy ideology and bigotry, combined with the habitus of patriarchal family values which breed contempt for the 'other'. The way of showing the process of 'reform' in jail -having to work with the resented 'other'- engages the viewer, yet the extremely poor cinematographic style (terrible slow motion shots) and the glamorization of violence greatly reduce its intended impact.

  • ig_____or's rating of the film American History X

Edward Norton delivers a strong and fearless performance. The movie is very edgy and touches on some real issues going on not just in american society but all over this globalized world we live in nowadays. I enjoyed the whole movie, however the very last scene/monologue felt a little out of place, and the images a bit "random". Still, so worth watching!

  • Harry Rossi's rating of the film American History X

I absolutely loved all the black and white sequences. I thought they were better shot, and more interesting than the color parts which felt much drier. That being said I thought the movie was overall very good until the last scene which totally pissed me off and in my opinion ruined the entire film and destroyed its very poignant message. If you ask me, Ed Norton is the only reason to see this movie. He's fantastic.

  • Frankly, Mr. Shankly's rating of the film American History X

scam. though Norton's performance and the laudable goal (analyze and deconstruct hate speech from the inside) had real value, the ultra-didacticism, the drama as major support (as all the rest is purely skin-deep) and the moralist final sequence made me despise this movie. sadly, overrated.

  • Ghostman's rating of the film American History X

And then, by having one conversation with a funny black dude, all sudden, he's not racist. And then his brother gets killed by a black kid and the movie is like isn't it great he's still not racist. Or is he? I don't know who is responsible for this but this is one dumb, confused film. An extra star for Ed Norton's performance.

  • anarresti's rating of the film American History X

It does seem strange to have an ex-skinhead preaching against nazism and racism. But there was Johnny Lee Clary, an actual historical figure, ex-Ku Klux Klan, that devoted his life to raise awareness about hate groups and racism. We want to believe that it is possible to fight hate. And maybe white power defenders want to believe that the character would not convert. A credible figure for everyone seems to emerge.

  • Risya's rating of the film American History X

I was stunned after seeing this. I have come to great realization that HATRED is the worst thing human could ever grow and they come with a terrible price!! It does its best to make the point that no one is ever right and no one is ever wrong. Also that everything that you believed to be true isn't always the way things are. I recommend to watch this movie with open mind and your mind will come out full.
