Djon África Regisserad av Filipa Reis, João Miller Guerra

Kritiker-recensioner

The new film takes off from his own personal experience into a fictional journey of self-discovery, whose loose plotting and hypnotic rhythms can remind you of work by current day film travelers such as Ben Rivers or Oliver Laxe.

A somewhat slight but languidly pleasurable film, it offers little in the way of conflict to complicate Miguel’s journey; yet, as the camera drifts away and onto the island’s environments, Djon África offers greater natural splendor than the more overtly landscape-orientated documentaries in the festival’s program.

  • Jane de Deus's rating of the film Djon África

This was a really nice film. Don't want to ruin it with words.

  • Michael Hoole's rating of the film Djon África

I thought this was a beautiful film. I actually liked the pacing, the film ambles it's way toward it's conclusion without being in any rush and when it gets there, feels humane and realistic. Some of the shots displaying the beauty of Cape Verde are great and the protagonist is very likeable. Also the soundtrack is wicked.

  • Protski's rating of the film Djon África

  • mpho3's rating of the film Djon África

"The script was a sort of 'bible,' a fictional skeleton that helped us—we could always get back to it if we needed to, but we were looking for something more sensory, let the trip inside the story. Blow up the fiction from the inside and let the scenes take us elsewhere into more of a feeling than of a structure." - Felipa Reis interviewed by Jorge Mourinha, Mubi Notebook.

  • saitosouta's rating of the film Djon África

  • Jason's rating of the film Djon África

I am absolutely and completely in love w/ DJON ÁFRICA. This is a kind of overflowing joy that manages to keep its cool (in deference to the mode of the film). (I would like to add that I saw it on basically an IMAX-sized screen and now think the 1.66/1 aspect ratio is the ideal ratio for those screens). I love how so much Portuguese cinema is deploying formal hybridity to engage w/ postcolonial cultural hybridity!

  • Katya Kazbek's rating of the film Djon África

A powerful coming-of-age story that blends with a larger musing on postcolonial identity, belonging and fatherhood. Miguel Moreira is incredible: so tender and youthful, and yet such a commanding presence. Watching him roam through Cabo Verde in search of his father is a treat.

  • Trinankur Banerjee's rating of the film Djon África

The director duo are definitely devoted students of Ozu and Kiarostami. Some really nice sequences in an otherwise predictable narrative of searching for one's roots. We have seen this many a times, but they often lead to unbearable mise-en-scene with painstaking depiction of existential crisis. Happy to see that this film restores the search among people amidst landscapes, as it always is.
