Jack Palance is...Dracula. No I wouldn't have believed it either but he actually does capture the tortured Count with some degree of class and gravitas. Dan Curtis made a handsomely produced take on the Bram Stoker classic that was originally made for television broadcast. Though it takes some liberties with the text this does rep a succinct and fairly solid telling.
Palance is a creepy looking Dracula, yet this version lacks emotion, otherwise. Director Dan Curtis may invoke atmospheric unease with his photography, but his direction of the action and horror lacks creative punch and tense bite. The pacing slacks too, and this adaptation lacks momentum and flow, failing to get into a groove. A tepid film.
