Edge of Tomorrow vanished from theaters about as quickly and unceremoniously as it arrived, and it wasn’t until its home video debut last month that I had the chance to have a look. I’m very glad I did. This is a sprightly, buoyant blockbuster, deftly realized and frightfully clever.

Liman isn’t simply rejecting such modes of filmmaking, but he’s disinterested in detail-oriented world-building, where formative, driving character motivations are an end in themselves. He uses the film’s premise against itself, wearing down any sense of expository propulsion by whittling Cage’s plight to an affective, existential joie de vivre, where the prospect of death is, paradoxically, the prospect of life.

Never before in any film had I experienced a real fear of death as I did in “Edge of Tomorrow.” Just when the film had coerced you into a familiar rhythm, you are ripped away from it, and thrust, like Cage himself, into an unknown experience — something nearly unheard of at the multiplex these days.

Was I the only one who saw Fellini, Tarkovsky and Oshii interwoven in a brilliant (Nolan would be jealous) Window of Opportunity'-ish (Stargate!) time loop concept..? "See you tomorrow" <3. On this one they do do learn on their loops. On 'Window of Opportunity' the loops erased everything they learned, so they had to convince every other loop everyone of their sanity and employ poise+ resolve and figure a wait out. ▽

  • Filipe F. Coutinho's rating of the film Edge of Tomorrow

I found Doug Liman's Edge of Tomorrow to be a huge surprise, a film very close to being a blockbuster masterpiece. In what can be best described as Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers, Edge subverts the tropes of the genre to offer a fresh take on a familiar concept. Anchored by an inventive and consistently gripping script, and led by the hugely charismatic Cruise, Liman's film never ceases being a fun joy ride!

  • phantompain's rating of the film Edge of Tomorrow

Worse than in Oblivion —if one could compare the two Tom Cruise sci-fi blockbusters— what could be an interesting theme ended up being ruined in a literal succession of plot holes, undeveloped character arcs, random failed twists, and a more than predictable ending, which, in order to make it all gather within a conventional blockbuster structure, fails to materialize the sake of the whole concept.

Trial & Error [defined as: repeated, varied attempts which are continued until success, or until the agent stops trying. It is an unsystematic method which does not employ insight, theory or organized methodology]

Well, least I can say is that I didn't expect to even want to watch that, but it turned out to be one of the best sci-fi films of these past couple of years. Groundhog Day + Starship Troopers + World War II. Very clever approach and highly entertaining.

  • Palmat's rating of the film Edge of Tomorrow

Awesome slice of sci-fi gold! Sure you can debate how many movies this one resembles but the fact is that Liman and Cruise brings finesse, urgency and the right amount of spectacle and drama to make this the best blockbuster in many moons. The rest of the cast is awesome and especially Blunt and Paxton make an impression. The only downside to this movie is the score which is without personality or identity.

  • msmichel's rating of the film Edge of Tomorrow

Grand summer entertainment from director Doug Liman and star Cruise. This science fiction/war film hybrid is indeed 'Groundhog Day' on steroids but is one enjoyable thrill ride from start to finish. Cruise could play this character in his sleep; its Emily Blunt who really impresses here with this against type turn. Effects are quite good (if derivative) and film is well shot by Dion Beebe. Well worth a watch.

  • Zachary T.'s rating of the film Edge of Tomorrow

The references to wars past are fascinating -- Brendan Gleeson's character is clearly Winston Churchill, and Operation Downfall bears striking similarities to Operation Overlord. The grunts of the camp and their commanders are right out of "Full Metal Jacket" or "Platoon." Even in the spectacular universe Doug Liman and company have created, war hasn't changed; and we keep reliving the same war, over and over again.
