Watched John Landis’ groundbreaking and highly influential music video in IMAX 3D ahead of Eli Roth’s Clock in its Walls. It’s hard to grasp today just how this exploded into the cultural conversation at the time, but suffice to say MJ was the biggest star in the world and this video was the only thing anybody talked about. The meta references, the dancing, the exhilarating beat... Thriller was an event.
I'm not a Michael Jackson fan, he's not bad he's just not my cup of tea. However, I really dug Thriller, and that surprised me. The song itself is pretty good, easily the best non-Jackson Five material I've heard from Michael, but it's really the effects and the way that the short pays a loving homage to classic horror that connected with me.
