A cute and clumsy ordinary family that anyone can relate to. At first I thought these short stories would make more sense as a tv series, until I realised they were already based on Hisaichi Ishii's comic strip. Alongside with 'The Tale of the Princess Kaguya' (whose visuals I believe are an improvement of this movie) are both my stylishly favourites from Isao Takahata.
Oh my gosh, what a wonderful film! Takahata is a master of so much, and here, while utilizing a different style and tone than many of his other films (that I've seen, anyway), he is able to get away with a story that is both heart-warming, and yet incredibly truthful. I wish there could be more films like this around.
