Kritiker-recensioner

The film doesn’t try to surprise us with narrative revelations so much as it tries to jolt us with gore. That results in a curiously undernourished story that at times feels like it’s setting up mysteries and subplots that never quite go anywhere. Nevertheless, as seen in the film’s terrifying opening and its gruesome climax, Avery deftly orchestrates some grisly, intense set pieces.

  • Scorpio Velvet's rating of the film Overlord

Gripping! Starts out as a normal WWII picture but then shifts into an odd horror show that is bound to thrill audiences with its over-the-top gory action & chills while it's safe to say that we can all think about it as "INGLORIOUS BASTERDS meets WOLFENSTEIN".

  • Nicholas Gregory's rating of the film Overlord

Starts with visual and creative-action splendor in its opening air raid sequence, then gradually gets less-and-less stimulating as it lingers on bland, generic war strategy too often until the climax. It may regain some creative allure then, but this backloading means the blending of its war-action and horror is badly formulated and emotionally uneven. Overlord is a film that should’ve been constantly invigorating.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Overlord

Return to Castle Wolfenstein. "Overlord" is so committed to its slow burn 'WWII men-on-a-mission movie becomes a monster mash' reveal that it buries most of the splatter in the back quarter of the film, almost as though the filmmakers are embarrassed by the Red Band trailer-ready piece of Nazisploitation they're making. Fortunately, the hard-R blood and viscera doesn't disappoint when it finally hits the walls.

  • J. O.'s rating of the film Overlord

Lazy and predictable, but full of enough genre goodness that you tend to forget about it. Nothing new about blue-blooded Americans fighting painfully generic, diabolical Nazis - but the excitement and pace kept it moving quickly. Some good effects, some good action sequences, but certainly nothing essential.

  • Matthew Martens's rating of the film Overlord

A lunkheaded pastiche stuffed with stock characters and lazy retreads of tired tropes that look unlikely to die, Overlord, while pretty (and effectively putrid) to look at, is neither state-of-the-art nor timeless. As an adrenal-gland gooser, however, it may merit an additional star, depending on your hormonal needs and profile.

  • Palmat's rating of the film Overlord

A very entertaining flick that melds WWII action with horror tropes. I really appreciate that the makers held back on the horror in the third act keeping this from getting too much "video-gamey" with gore and shoot-outs galore. The acting is good and the direction is snappy and to the point at every turn. What I enjoyed the best was that the movie never outstayed its welcome and kept things taut and fun.

  • msmichel's rating of the film Overlord

This strange mix of war picture and body horror Nazi nightmare might well be the B-movie genre hounds didn't even know they wanted. Others be warned. Plotting doesn't bear too much scrutiny but the kinetic pacing of the film and its' clichéd villains and heroes do cast a certain pleasant familiarity.

  • Steve Pulaski's rating of the film Overlord

BH Tilt and Bad Robot have quickly become two of my favorite studios because they're both willing to distribute eclectic pieces of entertainment like "Upgrade" and now "Overlord." It's not that either are resounding triumphs of their genre, but in the case of the latter, it's a fast-paced splatter-fest with satisfying elements of both Nazisploitation and body horror. The best video game movie not based on a game.
