ZVELF, sad to hear the battering received by Sansho Dayu and Rublev, hope more people vote at the dawn

Kenji, must give it to you, my introduction to Mizoguchi happened through your promotion and not arthouse cinema nearby, not imdb, neither TSPDT nor Sight and Sound!

+2 The Cameraman
+2 Once Upon a Time there was a Singing Blackbird
-1 La Cienaga
-1 Celine and Julie
-1 The Third Part of the Night

Thanks for all of your work on this Dib, I’ve discovered some fine films from this list, and have a load more still to watch. Well done everyone :)

It’s interesting that Passion of Joan of Arc, Andrei Rublev, A Man Escaped and Sansho the Bailiff are all films which are spiritual or considered spiritually powerful- present on Art and Faith’s lists at different times i think.. It’s taken some doing for any films in or round the original top 20 to have made it this far- Sansho missed the 20 only by alphabetical order. It seems making the 20 is an important cut-off point

It’s worth noting that just because a film has a high place on the TSPDT chart it doesnt mean that its widely seen. Sansho has less than 5,000 votes on imdb, fewer than Harakiri, A Man Escaped or Woman of the Dunes.

You’re quite right Jon, i was gonna say the same myself. Passion of Joan and Rublev of course have had a lot more votes on imdb, but even so i wouldn’t vote them down simply for change’s sake- substituting films that may not be as good; an ideal revolution doesn’t throw out baby with bathwater. Mizoguchi is hardly a household name in Japan either. But no doubt i harp on too much about him, there are so many other fish in the sea. Non-Anglophone cinema generally could do with promoting, rather than being divided into beasts and tiddlers in what is actually not a great sea but more like a pond, when Hollywood dominates the ocean.

Put Passion of Joan of Arc into the sea alongside Titanic, and it’s a tiny tiddler too.

Which, by coincidence, brings us back to Andrei Rublev; here’s a poem by the Archbishop himself.

Rublev

One day, God walked in, pale from the grey steppe,
slit-eyed against the wind, and stopped,
said, Colour me, breathe your blood into my mouth.

I said, Here is the blood of all our people,
these are their bruises, blue and purple,
gold, brown, and pale green wash of death.

These (god) are the chromatic pains of flesh,
I said, I trust I shall make you blush,
O I shall stain you with the scars of birth

For ever, I shall root you in the wood,
under the sun shall bake you bread
of beechmast, never let you forth

To the white desert, to the starving sand.
But we shall sit and speak around
one table, share one food, one earth.

I’m very pleased that Hou and Yang are represented by superb films, my favourites by each. Worthy of a top 20. If memory serves, Time to live…was in an epic battle with L’Avventura in the classic Italy-Taiwan match in the world cup.

p.s- judging from imdb, Come and See is much better known than Sansho, A Man Escaped, Harakiri and Woman of the Dunes

Filmy, Andrei Rublev is a dead man walking at this point by my count and would need at least 3 positive votes to survive.

Jon K, you’re absolutely right about canonized not being equal to being widely seen, which points to the fallacy of those with a knee-jerk opposition to canon films.

Just an update -The use of the midget in That Obscure Object of Desire is not exploitative, in my opinion.

In case of misunderstanding, i like Rowan Williams- just making a link between the kill the canon comments here and King Henry versus the then Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas a Becket.

I guess the final list will be upon us soon. In the meantime, if you’re interested in checklists, I’ve been updating the “Every film to enter the top 20” list as we go along. It’s up to 164 titles now. I’ve seen 67%.

ROUND SIXTY NINE

Hurrrrr, sexy sixty nine. Anyway, no votes down, -1 to all, let’s do this:

79 tallies?

That only takes down Come and See, The Passion of Joan of Arc, Seduction (1929), Stone Wedding, Kings of the Road, and Andrei Rublev. Surprised to see Joan of Arc go, she’s held on to that list like hellfire for nearly this entire game. Wait a minute… YOU BURNED HER AFTER YOU USED HER.

A Time to Live and a Time to Die found it’s time to die at the bottom.

22 movies. So basically whatever is the bottom two this next round are dropped, and that’s that.

Harakiri (Seppuku) 32
The Cameraman (Keaton) 32
3 Women 31
We Won’t Grow Old Together 29
Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors 28
A Brighter Summer Day 28
A Man Escaped 25
The Third Part of the Night 23
Woman in the Dunes 23
Celine and Julie Go Boating 22
Jeanne Dielman, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles 20
The Cloud-Capped Star 20
Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks 20
City of Pirates 20
Death in the Land of Encantos 20
Once upon a Time there was a Singing Blackbird 19
La Cienaga 18
The Executioner 18
Charulata 17
The Age of the Earth 16

Sansho the Bailiff 16
Yeelen 15

I did not take -1 from the bottom five because that would have gone into the top 20.
